ExCel_AP^® – Combination Povidone-Iodine / Isopropyl Alcohol
Not your traditional Iodophor!™

Povidone-Iodine and Alcohol have long been considered effective antiseptics. Now Aplicare offers single, triple, and single 2.5" swabsticks saturated with a new combination Povidone-Iodine / Isopropyl Alcohol formulation:

• Fast drying, fast acting (saves time)
• Efficacy comparable to and in some cases, better than CHG (chlorhexidine gluconate)
• Listed as "Preferred" by in the 2006 INS Standards of Practice for catheter access site preparation and maintenance.
• Now available in the Aplicare Advantage™ Dressing Change System™ (Kits)

Many studies have been published reporting enhanced efficacy and/or cost savings with combination CHG/alcohol formulations vs. aqueous povidone-iodine formulations. However, none has compared combination CHG/alcohol formulations to combination PVP-I/alcohol formulations*. In addition, no studies have been published which address how much of the efficacy of combination CHG/alcohol formulations is actually due to the presence of chlorhexidine and how much is attributable to alcohol. 

Data submitted as part of the New Drug Application (NDA) for the approval of ChloraPrep^® showed that when ChloraPrep was tested under conditions prescribed by the Tentative Final Monograph (TFM) entitled “Topical Antimicrobial Drug Products for Over-the-Counter Human Use; Tentative Final Monograph for Health-Care Antiseptic Drug Products”, it generally did not have significantly greater efficacy than 70% IPA alone – see FDA's Microbiology Review and Statistical Review of the ChloraPrep NDA. Alcohol clearly plays a significant role in the efficacy of both chlorhexidine-based and PVP-I-based combination formulations. 

In numerous studies conducted by outside laboratories, ExCel_AP has been demonstrated to be as effective as ChloraPrep and in some cases more effective!
