If the CDC states that a 2% CHG formulation is "preferred", then why is there a need for combination products such as ChloraPrep® and Chlorascrub™, which contain CHG and alcohol?
“Need” is probably too strong a word in this context. Per FDA requirements, manufacturers must show that their combination formulations are more efficacious than comparable formulations with only one of the active ingredients present. If used as directed, antiseptic formulations with single active ingredients perform adequately, but combination formulations perform even better.
