When Alcohol is combined with PVP-I, isn't it considered a tincture?
In medicine, a tincture is an alcoholic extract (e.g., of an herb) or solution of a nonvolatile substance (e.g., of iodine, mercurochrome.). So by definition, a mixture of alcohol and PVP-I (or any other antiseptic; e.g., CHG) is, in fact, a tincture. However, a mixture of alcohol and PVP-I is not the same as tincture of iodine which contains elemental iodine in alcohol, and as a result, is generally more irritating and less stable than formulations containing PVP-I and alcohol.
